Hi, this is Fatmanur. I am a Ph.D. candidate in Global Governance at the Balsillie School of International Affairs, Wilfrid Laurier University, my research focuses on migration governance, critical border studies, surveillance, solidarity, resistance, and gender. In my dissertation, I explore how technology shapes the migration experiences and resistance strategies of migrants navigating the Balkan route. My work has been published in International Migration, Mashriq & Mahjar, International Health Trends and Perspectives, and The Balsillie Papers.

My background on migration research spans over a decade. I have received my Master’s degree in Political Science and International Relations from Marmara University with a thesis on Syrian refugee women’s solidarity networks through community kitchens across three cities. I was a visiting scholar at Lund University’s Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies. And I have worked as a research intern at Sabancı University’s Istanbul Policy Center, Koç University’s Migration Research Center and Kiel University of Applied Sciences’ the Institute of Interdisciplinary Gender Research and Diversity.

Among my professional awards and accolades are the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (2024 & 2025), the Balsillie Doctoral Fellowship (2022-2026), and the Wilfrid Laurier University Dean’s Scholarship (2024 & 2025).

I currently work as a Research Assistant at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Global Adversity and Wellbeing Research Group and serve as a Ph.D. Support Officer at the Migration, Mobilities, and Social Politics Cluster at BSIA.
